It's English, all right - quite a few kicking around Essex (whence my own great-grandfather departed with his family to emigrate to New Zealand, arriving in 1873. There are Dowmans in County Cork, Ireland as well. Fact is, though: it is a rare name.<br /><br />A certain Lieut Dowman fought at Puke-te-Kauere in the war over the Waitara purchase in 1860 (65th Regiment of Foot). He was my great-Uncle, I think.
